      Wow, this is intense. Of all your beluga shots, this one portrays the whale out of the water, and in the most "human" of poses. She (?) looks both familiar and alien at the same time.

      I also like the shot where her tail splash can be seen outlined in light on the water. Pretty amazing view - how did you manage to take these photos?

      Thanks, ancawonka -- I hadn't considered that this was the most "human" pose and so also most alien, but that makes sense. She (I think she) really did seem to pose for this one, too, right in front of me.

      As for getting the shots, the Vancouver aquarium has both above-ground and underwater views of the beluga whale tank, and I spent a fair amount of time entranced at each location.

      nice shot. One reason they have a "human" look is that unlike other whales their neck muscles are not fused. So they can move their head around like we do, and when they are above water and bend their head down it gives them the appearance of having shoulders.
