Screenshot of Flickr Photo Page Enhancer

Screenshot of Flickr Photo Page Enhancer by jrhyley.
I rewrote Fabricio Zuardi's Flickr Photo Page Enhancer Greasemonkey script to work with the new flash-free flickr for all you fun-loving firefox-using flickrites. I made some additional enhancements as well. Get my new version here.

See the accompanying blog entry for more info.

That's pretty cool! title is coming up "undefined"... Oh, it can only find that info on your own images. An API thing?

Ah. Thanks for pointing that out! Fixed. It grabs that info from the page now, instead of relying on Flickr to have already defined those as variables. I should know better, that's how Fabricio's original version of the script ended up so broken after the recent de-flashification.

Version 0.2.3: Fixing a minor annoyance. Now clicking on "Add a Tag" will automatically populate your most-used tags, instead of you having to click again to do so.

This script was majorly broken in regards to how it figured out the dimensions of the thumbnail photo for the quicklink html. It actually just didn't bother figuring it out and used defaults based on the photo I tested it on... stupid. That has been fixed now. Using the old version of the script is considered harmful.

i do so love this script .. the only improvement i can think of would be a quicklink for the "small" and "square" sizes as well, but normally i just strip out the siing in the tag andchange "t" to "m" or "s"

i use this userscript the most of all.

Can't have that! I'm a stickler for valid markup in my own, selective way. This latest version of the script does what you suggest, and thanks for the idea.

It's a lot more useful than even I thought it would be when I (re)wrote it. I genuinely can't wait for Flickr to steal it. ;-)

ah .. but now there is no way to "hide quicklink"

i doubt flickr will steal it .. not because it isn't good, but because it makes it too easy to "steal" photos.

heck, you can't even get this code on the different sizes page unless the photo is CC {if the photo isn't your own}

It was time for an updated screenshot anyway:

But that is not all it does, and now we're getting really close to the crux of the arguments in the Grokster case. :)

Having a link to the original size makes it easier to set a picture as your desktop wallpaper, which is what I use it for, if I use it on someone else's photo. That's pretty much the classic definition of fair use, isn't it? If not, I'm infringing on someone's rights nearly every time I start my computer, as my rotation of desktops has quite a few photos from Flickr.

Additionally, I can't think of a way the Quicklink could have an infringing use. It makes it easy to link to an image you think is cool. Despite cases that have come close, no country has yet made linking a crime, AFAIR.

The quicklink is what I most would like to see in Flickr-proper. It could still be controlled by the photo-uploader's preferences, the same way "blog this" is. It's really just an easier version of "blog this" anyway, with less (no) setup required.

kelly v. aribasoft established that thumbnail linking was fair use, but it also established that not all tumbnail linking was.

but the legality isn't at all important, the issue is that flickr caters to people who think it is WRONG {not illegal, Wrong} to thumbnail link, and this script doesn't cater to that sentiment at all {god bless it}

the original size thing is something else .. flickr cleary tries to prevent people from finding the original sized versions of things, given certain settings by the photo's owner.

on the other hand, they have publicly stated that circumvention is acceptable practice, and that they will not censor people who publicly distribute advice on how to circumvent.

but they will never adopt this script's interface or functionality .. even quicklink.

how do i know?

heck, flickr used to have thumbnail link code under every photo regardless of whether you owned it or not or its CC status .. until enough people whined that this 'encouraged stealing'.

by the way, i think it is just about perfect now : )

although sometimes it puts the height where the width should be for some reason.

Ah. So it's a user preference thing, and not a legal thing. That's good to know, as I'd much rather have people miffed at me than litigious.

A version of the script that was live on my site for about 8 hours has two misplaced variables in the thumbnail quicklink. I've since corrected it.

ah .. yes .. working much better now.

i wouldn't worry about being sued, all the script does is code links that people could already make by hand with information made available by flickr.

Script has been recoded to do most of the work via the flickr API. This is much better.Details here. I'm comfortable calling this a 1.0 release.
