The contrasty comes from duplicating the base
layer, running the channel mixer (greyscale,
red at 100%), and mixing that back down on
the original using overylay or soft light. It
makes it more contrasty but it also reduces
that "digital picture" look by a
bit.

I ask because these shots are very contrasty. More so than I ever seem to get outdoors with my 20D.
