What a great shot!! Love the colorful pheasant against the muted background. And the egg is the icing on the cake...so to speak!

Yeah, that egg. I gave some thought to editing it out of the picture.

This bird's pretty clearly a male; there were other, less showy, birds in the pen with it. Not really sure what the story is with the egg. Elsewhere on the grounds I got attacked by a swan that was protecting its nest, and was warned away by several geese, but these birds didn't really appear to be nesting.

Pal: It's a Chinese native. While the Sanctuary's mostly host to thousands of Michigan-native water birds and passers-through, there's a section devoted to what the tour map calls "upland game-birds," both native and exotic; most of them are very pretty, in a surprising variety of ways.

Not sure how the sanctuary came to collect the exotics, but they've had them as long as I can remember (50 years, give or take). They always used to have several peacocks (& hens), but didn't see any of those today.

Lovely bird, nicely captured here. Why, when pheasants can fly do they insist on walking across busy roads??
