@MadMat - Please feel free to ask me anything you want. Much of what you see in my profile is new to me, like IR and HDR, both I have only been doing for a few months, and I would be glad to share anything about the technique with you or anyone else. That goes for any of my images, I would be happy to teach you anything you are interested in learning. Regards, and thanks for the great compliments!

wow! that's very kind of you ! i think i knw a little a bit how to do hdr, in dont really no about IR i guess it is infrared, and i guess you need to have that option on your camera...
my questions will be more about your crazy panoramics or planets, like the ones for the rock band, are those stuffs in photoshop ?
Posted 34 months ago. ( permalink )

Josh Sommers  Pro User  says:

MadMat - IR is infrared, and it is not really a feature of the camera, it is just a lens filter. As long as your camera can accept a filter, you can do IR.

The planets and the pictures of Motogruv are the same thing, they are called stereographic panoramas, and they are done with a program called Hugin. Basically you take a bunch of shots (in my case 17) and stitch those together to form a 360x180 degree panorama, called an equirectangular, and then using the same program (hugin) you project the image to a stereographic- that is either a tube or a little planet.

I wish my dslr was more IR sensitive(the canon 20d is basically the least IR sensitive dslr). I will have to try to get to know this minolta dimage 7 I just got. If it doesn't work out for me it's off to ebay for it...and then I'll save my money for a better dslr...I've heard the nikons are pretty good.

Great pictures!!!
Had a question. For shooting IR, do I really need to replace my inside filter or can I just put a threaded filter and get the results you got, in color? Im new to this so sorry for the ignorance, any help is greatly appreciated. If you can email me at jav818@yahoo.com. thanks

Josh Sommers  Pro User  says:

Hi Jav- Yeah, all I use is a screw on filter. The problem is that with the filter you can't see through the viewfinder, and in some cases the auto focus won't work either. Also you have to take very long exposures. So what I do is setup the camera on a tripod, focus manually, then put the filter in place and shoot with the timer.

I was thinking of buying a modified camera just for shooting IR. If you dont mind, what settings did you use for taking an IR pic? I bought a filter that is 950nm, way black and I shot in manual but got nothing even at 20 seconds, so Im sure that Im missing many steps. What iso is best and shutter speed WB and so on. Thanks for the help

Josh Sommers  Pro User  says:

I don't know off-hand what settings I used, just trial and error I guess. Generally speaking though I would shoot for the lowest ISO possible, and fastest shutter speed. So I would crank the Aperture down as small as possible, like f/4 (depending on the lens, f2.8) and take test shots at different shutter speeds until the shots were well exposed. For white balance, I set my white balance with the filter on, pointed at a patch of well lit dark green grass.
