Planet Golden Gate

Planet Golden Gate by Josh Sommers.
Golden Gate Bridge, stereographic projection, by request from Pat's Pics. I have a few other vantage points that I am working on, one from the other side of the bay, but I think this one was the best vantage point.

I was hoping to get it from this vantage point: www.flickr.com/photos/20638544@N00/63677359/ but the tide was in and that beach was rocky cliffs today.

@Igor - This is a stereographic projection of an equirectangular panorama. 17 shots (times 3 exposures) stitched together with hugin, tone mapped with Photomatix and then reprojected to stereographic with Hugin. Final touch ups in Photoshop.

@Bill Brown - thanks, and it is my pleasure.

At the moment there are 100,702 photos tagged "golden gate bridge" on Flickr search ~~ the number never stops growing ~~ and this is where I found your fabulous planet. It's GOT to be among the finest renditions of this orange (not golden) bridge ever to appear in Flickrdom. Terrific work.

I tried to do the same - shot 20 photos, stichted them with hugin (panorama projection) and then I wanted to create this "planet" by applying some "steorgraphic" projection. But how?!
Do you know any detailed tutorial out there?
Your work is terrific!

Josh Sommers  Pro User  says:

Finbref- If you shot a full 360 degree panorama, then the easiest way to create a stereographic projection is to use the Flexify plugin for Photoshop. It is very self explanatory with flexify.

However you can also do it with hugin, provided you stitched a full 360x180 degree equirectangular panorama. If so, once you have stitched it, just load that single image into hugin and choose equirectangular as the lens type and 360 as the FOV, then choose Stereographic as the projection type and rotate the image 90 degrees on the Y axis (I think it is the Y axis, it's been a while for me). That is all there is to it.

finbref says:

Wow, thank you very much for this fast asnwer. I will try this immediately (the hugin stuff, I do not have photoshop).... Up to now I made just 20 photos around me (360°), but not where my feet were standing. I'll catch this up later and post my results.

Very, very awesome. I've done a few like this before (not of San Francisco), but I've never had this much success.

Josh Sommers  Pro User  says:

jpetralia- thanks! The most important aspect to "success" with these (because success is a relative term after all) in my opinion is having a panoramic tripod head and a wide angle lens.
