Columns

Columns by Josh Sommers.
A variation on the 2 or 3 prong image, inspired by the work of Walter Wick, who managed to photograph his version using a partially reflective piece of glass and very careful lighting to create the illusion. I am first to admit that this is nowhere near the level of quality that Wick produces in his works, but I'll keep working at it.

This 3d scene was modeled and rendered with Cararra and was lit with an HDRI environment map of one of my equirectangular HDRs from last year.

Those of you who enjoy the little details should take a look at the reflection in the sphere.

These are awesome. I wouldn't have thought it possible to do something like this in a 3D renderer. I remember doodling these and similar all through high school.

Great Job.

Amazing that this was produced as a 3d render. Is it one model or did you do two renders and a graduated blend?

This is a great set. I also recall this as an Escher image, but I could be wrong. Excellent.
Do you do combinations of renders in ps or is this a complete render? In case of the last, a big Hooray for you :-)

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like these, as I'm pretty sure I've got a few more left in me...

@Pat- I do think Escher drew a version of the Two-or-Three image, but I'm not sure. I don't recall seeing it done as columns by Escher, I got that idea from Walter Wick. I'm hesitant to answer the other question because I'd rather have a big hooray, but yes, this is two renders combined in PS. The trick with these images is getting the pieces and the camera all lined up correctly, the PS part is pretty simple compared to the other kinds of stuff we usually do in PS.

Still nice work. I admire the excellent lighting job here, pretty 'realistic' ! The sphere makes a great adition, not distracting.

I always enjoy your photos, these images are incredible. Though I confess that late at night/early morning viewings are a bit much for my brain to cope with the concept!

Thanks everyone!

@Pat- The HDRI environment map lighting really helps to create realistic-ish renderings. This scene has no lights other than the HDRI map.

@cosygreeneyes- I'm with you. Imagine what it's like trying to create these late at night. It's even harder to wrap your brain around it then.

Every time I see your new efforts I think to myself that I must really get to grips with more PS work than just levels, curves and tweaks. This sets me going yet again - but I will probably give up again :>0. Thanks for sharing Josh.
