this is amazing :|
flying by josdiiri.
This is a picture of one of our bats flying in a wind tunnel. She is a female lesser short-nosed fruit bat (Cynopterus brachyotis), original from south-east Asia. Beautiful animal and excellent flier.

you can see some videos of this bat flying in the wind tunnel here: www.brown.edu/Departments/EEB/EML/videos.htm

It made it to Explorer. Thanks!

shenxy.- the dot a hole in the wing membrane. Most bats have a lot of holes, of different sizes. A few weeks after this shot she made herself a huge hole, but she kept flying as usual.

Out of curiosity, do the holes repair themselves?
Posted 39 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

josdiiri  Pro User  says:

Marianne, bats tend to have small holes on the wings. If they get bigger holes made by trauma, they repair them but not completely. Despite, the healing abilities of the wing compared with the skin of other mammals is amazing.

So, you are saying that the hole is not a 4 mm wing biopsy? Sure looks like a typical punch to me ;-)

From my experience a hole that size will heal in 1-2 weeks.

This is photo is really well done, very interesting. The colours are really well, and it is also a good document. I can just point to suggestions, however they're minor ones. On is that the body and head of the bat could be more illuminated, but this could be just because I'm seeing in the monitor, it's possible the real image does not suffer from this. The other is that I would like to see this photo with a larger inferior black area, the bat is too near the edge. These are my two cents. Anyway, this is a really good photo, congratulations!

Excellent capture. I love the simplicity of the shot with a plain background although I, as the last comment, would of prefered the image more central. Other than that it's wonderful. I think the lighting and shadows are perfect.
