Veteran's Day 2009This is a page from my maternal grandfather's notes on his incarceration in a civilian prisoner of war camp in Manila, Philippines from 1942-45. The drawing here is of Camp Holmes, one of the prison camps in which they were held. He was a Presbyterian minister, first in China and then in the Philippines, and he & his family were interned in Manila after the Japanese invasion. While their experiences were not easy, judging from my grandfather's notes and his sermons afterwards, they seemed to have strengthened his faith and his belief that every man has the responsibility to make sure that his neighbor, regardless of race, religion or nationality, is treated humanely.
Uploaded on Nov 11, 2009 Eastern Shore, VAAn iPhone panorama done with an app called Pano. Worked out pretty well, minus my father's head movement on the right. Check it out in original size.
Uploaded on Nov 6, 2009 happy bikeOkay, so I loved this bike when it was all Nuovo Record, but now I really love this bike with Ergo shifters. Noticeably lighter than my Pinarello and super-duper stable, especially descending (unfair comparison really, due to differences in frame geometry.) A few tweaks here and there during the ride dialed in the shifting, which is lighter action than what I am used to but I'll figure it out. Mismatched wheels, but I kept the front wheel because with a Nuovo Record hub & a Campy Omega 19 rim there was no reason to switch.
Uploaded on Oct 30, 2009 happy guyI had a slight cold that turned into laryngitis just in time for my poetry reading at Prince Books in Norfolk, VA (thank you Sara Pishko for your continued support!) which then turned into a flem-stival in my lungs that lingers still. But I had to ride today. It was starting to gnaw my bones that I was in danger of spending most of the fall off the bike. Beautiful day, perfect temperature, typical headwind in all directions, but I road 22 miles and then as my reward, coughed up something that looked like a decaying mouse. Gack.
