WDC 2008: Working in the Industry Panel

WDC 2008: Working in the Industry Panel by jontangerine.
Great panel from the guys that covered everything from APIs to Chrome, ruined only slightly by the conference equivalent of the <blink> tag - distracting animated text and logos on the screen in the background zooming around like it's Flash 1999.

Thanks. I forgot to look, but was the <blink> tag in evidence during the panel I sat on, later, too?

The motion graphic was only really built for use on the web, definitely not for loop. It was even annoying Craig who actually built it.

Jon, the curtains were closed behind you for the second panel.

Intermissions was the perfect place for it. Having it as a panel backdrop was like animated gifs in web pages.

The panel was great Jon, evidenced by all the guys who wanted to ask questions of all of you afterwards, especially about career paths.

Having a little more direct moderation on the second panel seemed to work better, too, Alex. We forgot to touch on places outside of Bristol; there seems to be loads of folks doing well living a stone's throw from the beach.

Bags of useful information was flying around during the day, both in the sessions I saw, and in the hallways after. Great people, too. A minor criticism of a chunk of video left looping by an unwitting technician doesn't detract from that.

Problem is trying to find people outside of Bristol but still in the South West.

Don't worry, next year we'll stop any "intermission" videos. I was going to get little pointers displaying who was who, to help people link names to faces, but I ran out of time.

WDC2009 here I come!

@dotjay - YOU need a haircut? ;)

It was a great event - I only wish I'd made it to SkillSwap the night before to make the most out of dropping down to Bristol! It seems like WDC will just keep getting better - every major uni should have one!
