Late Night Card Sharks

Nurul in a moment of intensity facing off against Waki over a tough game of Monopoly cards on a steamy hot Singapore night.

*Sorry friend, just a note, I had to delete the comment below, even though I allowed it for quite a while, with the giant glittering animated Christmas gif. I deeply appreciate the kind words but I just can't have some huge sparkling thing distract from the photo, as this is one of my favorite shots of a very dear friend.

Another great shot. It seems I've become a fan of your photostream. I'm also a big fan of that camera and lens combination. I have some disabilities that add difficulties to quickly focus with a manual focus lens particularly, of course, wide open. Any pointers? Also, would you mind if I added you as a contact?

Hi there. Thank you for the nice comment! Of course you can add me as a contact. Pointers for shooting wide open with a manual focus lens, for starters, when you think about focusing in general, it really is a matter of just moving closer or further from your subject. If you never touch the focal ring on the lens, you can bring your subject into focus by simply moving yourself. When I am shooting street photography, I really don't have much time to think about my focus, my subject is moving and will inevitably, out of instinct, notice me within a few seconds. Rather than spend any time focusing, I decide the distance beforehand, using the measurements on top of my lens. Those little numbers on our lenses refer to the distance of our subjects. Thus, if you set it to 3 or 4, then anything 3 or 4 meters away from you will be in focus. It took me a long time to wrap my head around it, but once you get used to it, this technique, in my opinion, makes it much easier to shoot with a very shallow depth of field. Give it a try and shoot me a mail if you ever have any questions. Photography is such a pure joy as an art form, especially with the limitless degree of experimentation you can do with it, there really is no right or wrong way to go about it. :)

Kind of surreal stumbling over my old friend Nurul while randomly browsing Flickr. It's a small world. BTW I shoot on Leica R lens – not bad bokeh too.
