A nixie is one of those tubes that you see there. They're almost like bulbs with a whole load of filaments inside, shaped to make numbers (most of the time). They've been made more or less by 7 segment LEDs, which don't require the higher voltage, are far more resilient, but sadly a lot less romantic...

So a nixie clock is a clock made out of nixies. Google for some excellent examples.
