Looks interesting, I have never seen this
before. Do you know anything about it?

Hi Baz,
It's a World War 1 Acoustic Mirror located
in a field at the edge of the Beacon Lagoons
Nature Reserve at Kilnsea.
The Acoustic Mirror is like an early day
radar system. During WW1 war planes
travelled relatively slowly and because of
this there was a time delay between hearing
them and seeing them.
On the image you can see a corroded metal
pole placed in front of the concrete mirror.
On the end of this pole a microphone was
placed. The operator sat behind the
structure and listened through headphones for
the sound of enermy aircraft being focused by
the mirror onto the microphone.
The mirror is facing the sea but apparently
set back from the sea by a few hundred yards
to prevent the sound of the waves being
focused by the mirror and drowning out the
sound of the planes.
This 'technology' was soon obsolete as the
aircraft became faster and could then be seen
before being heard.
All of the images of yesterday's outing are
viewable here - gallery.hull-online.co.uk/East+Yorkshire/coas

If you are interested in visiting, and it's
well recommended, let me know and I'll email
you the OS grid reference / GPS coordinates
and the best route in by foot.

But you got to Spurn Steve and we have that
to do, possibly in a month or so.
I've had a look through your entire Spurn
photostream and have noted some points of
interest for us to look at.
