Como viver junto - 27a Bienal de São Paulo (7/10 - 17/12/2006)

Whether its purpose is to combat terrorism, to deter drug trafficking or to control juvenile delinquency, the practice of “zero tolerance” is often used as a tool of political propaganda. Abdicated by government leaders in both France and the United States, its veritable goal is take away the basic human rights protections of “the other”, pushing him towards a status of quasi-illegality and making him an enemy of society. By questioning these social grey areas while refusing to fall into the trappings of “social art”, Adel Abdessemed once again confirms that “a hygienic world without conflict is impossible.”

O artista multimídia Adel Abdessemed utiliza linguagem e formas muito diferentes, que podem ser vistos em seus vídeos e instalações murais. O uso de tão diversos materiais e ferramentas reflete em seu trabalho um mundo caótico. Seu trabalho questiona os limites sociais, políticos e culturais tanto nas sociedades muçulmanas quanto nas ocidentais. Sem impor seu próprio ponto de vista, os trabalhos de Abdessemed sempre propõem uma reflexão sobre a natureza humana. “Não estamos num mundo puro e higiênico. Com a era global, estamos no centro de um ciclone, afogando-nos”, diz Abdessemed.

Practice Zero Tolerance ressemble à un grand échiquier, dont la règle de jeu - tolérance zéro - s’affiche en titre. Echiquier politique où le fou vengeur brûle la «monture» de son adversaire, où la tour se fait monument pour la liberté d’expression, où le chat mange la souris, et dont les animaux-soldats vadrouillent dans les rues de Paris. Dans le circuit en serpentin du Plateau, le visiteur avance ainsi parmi les pièces, plongé dans un jeu cruellement réaliste.
