homemade tetris shelves
i took a woodshop class with phil at a cool place called the Eliot School in JP. it was nice having some experts around (mostly italian btw), who could instruct on techniques - and how not to sever fingers and things.
i wanted to make something that could work in any living space i inhabit as i'll probably move many times... something modular. perhaps it's selling out to the retro craze, or perhaps it's a tribute to my gameboy days, but i went for a tetris theme.
the pieces are all separate. each side of each piece is made of three 3/4" thick strips of hard wood (red oak, walnut, red oak). the strips and the sides are all connected using a technique called biscuiting. coated with a clear poly... no staining... the wood was far too expensive.
now that i spent all that time joining, planing, measuring, crosscutting, ripping, biscuiting, sanding, and finishing (which i finally go to the week before taking off for buenos aires) i realized the whole project would have been quicker and cooler if i had made each piece from a different type of wood. retrospect.
while i'm doing my traveling/working they're sitting in my grandmothers apartment holding her never-going-to-be-used-again VHS collection that sits in the living room. in totality, an ode to old media.
for the uninitiated... working with wood is rewarding, but time consuming, fund consuming, and finger consuming (one of the teachers was missing some). glad i did it though, and hope you enjoy.
