sort of a "first goatse" kind of moment.

Exactly. The funny thing was, the man and I had both participated in the nude photo workshop so we were quite proud. Out of context, the photos had a very different response than we expected... a kind of "ewww" instead of "nice!" ;-)

Yes, nudes should be presented gently.

I forget this at times and pay the penalty.

And I love it how Joi without even flinching recognizes the term "goatse". The humanity, what is the the Internets making us into - and who is human enough to grasp that?

Quite seriously, how come we would never imagine critizicing Joi for posting nude pictures online, considering he's probably generally assumed to be a "proper man" who is faithful to his woman?

As the picture indicates, there are obviously people who would react with an "ewww" and definitely more than flinch at goatse - Have they not been on the internets enough?

I wouldn't assume it is just about desensitizing - that would be another "video games are making kids violent" debate. The rule is obviously becoming the "nice!" reaction and not flinching at goatse - why, how, and can that development be considered healthy and generally "good"?

Joi's viewers are people who I'm assuming are generally interested in what the Internet is doing to people and what people can do with the Internet... so, please excuse me if you consider talking goatse terribly off topic here. :-)

CJ: I think that while there is some desensitizing going on, I don't think goatse and my nudes have THAT much in common.

I reacted to goatse because it has become a verb on the Internet that everyone knows. I don't actually goatse people, but I know what it means. I don't think it is really that strange for people to use it as a verb.

Also, I think that whether you think nudes are "rude" or not depends on your background and your context.

The nudes that I photographed were part of a local government sponsored workshop. My finance and her best friend were there. Probably about half of the participants were women including the first prize winning photographer.

Many people think of nudes as capturing the beauty of the human body and feeling shy about it is like feeling shy about examining your own body in the mirror. Personally, I think it has very little to do with being a "proper man" or about faith in "his woman". So personally, I think that the ability to view nude photographs for the beauty that depict isn't about becoming desensitized but actually the opposite. It's about the ability to put aside silly social hangups to view and understand beauty.

Having said that, the context is important. To view the nude images that I've posted, you have to turn "safe mode off". I assume that by doing that you have chosen to view things like nudes. Otherwise, why would you do this?

Anyway, I am curious what others think about this. I realize I sound a bit defensive, but we had some long conversations about this at the conference I was just at and this is sort of where I came out on this issue.

Joi: In no way did I mean to trigger your defensiveness about the nude pictures, they were beautiful and I should probably have had at least one smiley after my first sentence in the second post above. Silly me. :-)

I think we're having pretty much two different discussions, because indeed your pictures have little in common with goatse except possibly for the reactions "eww!" versus... well, some sort of acceptance is the best I think goatse would get. :-)

As far as your nude pictures go, which should probably be the primary topic here, I think they were very pretty and acceptable (though you missed in focus here and there? :-) )... maybe except for the curious references an asian girl with a long long rope may incur... but then I'm also probably a very very desensitized person, and I know my girlfriend would share my view at least as far as your pictures go. You've got CJ's thumbs up, proceed.

Then, regarding goatse or more specifically the riches of strangeness the Internets have to give, I indeed think that there is something different than just desensitizing going on, which is an interesting topic, because it's sanctioned by plenty adults. You were not blaming me for turning the "sensitive minds" filter off, am I right? People have been saying "what about our children?" for very long, but here I am wondering "what about our adults then?", a curious thought stirred by the farfetched combination of mentioning goatse on a page next to the mission of Ken Mogi (who seem to be philosophizing about humanity mixed with technology). Sorry if I lost anyone along the way.

My father is a painter and an illustrator, He teaches at an art college and runs a life drawing class, I grew up in a house surrounded by nude paintings.
When i was young I used to think he was a dirty old man, but as I was gradually exposed to more art and got into it myself I realised there was a good reason that artists for centuaries have painted the naked form.
Its beautiful.
Many cultures in the world barely wear any clothes at all and nakedness is not stigmatized in the way that it is in more 'developed' cultures.(I use the word 'developed in its loosest possible sense)
The association that all nude pictures are rude is a cultural malaise that seperates us from our bodies and the essential sameness of everyone around us.To teach us from a young age that nude is bad is something that i detest in 'developed' cultures.
The nude is beautiful and anyone who gets all freaked out at a nude body needs to seriously look at WHY it freaks them out.
More power to ya Joi, I say dont worry about the prudes who havent gotten past their own hang ups.

Moonwire, you poor dear...
That the discussion actually takes place shows what a strange society we live in.
The nudes that Joi shot were fun.
I was more concerned when he started taking pictures of bugs and flowers. Nudes, they're just people.

moonwire: You poor schmuck :), you seem be only on the very nice pages of the internet, right?

joi: I enjoyed your nude shots, thought I was surprised to find them in your stream. But hey, thought I could never take nude shots - I even suck at normal portrait shots - I envy those who can master it in this artful way.

I wish I had to Google "goatse". There are people who have lived and died without seeing that image, and on that score at least, I envy them.

Rather than a "first goatse" sort of moment, it's more like a "first fart" sort of moment, when you're comfortable enough with someone that you can acknowledge your own lumpen humanity without it turning into a crushing debacle. A sign of human intimacy not in the slightest bit similar to "goatse"... despite my somehow finding a way to another metaphor involving anuses.
