Let me tell you about the time I met Vint Cerf.

It was when I lived in Fairfax Virginia, and I was pulling into the Giant Foods to buy some groceries. As I'm circling the lot I end up behind a Jag with the tags "CERFS UP" which I thought was pretty funny. "That'd be funny if that was Vint Cerf's car," I thought, and didn't think much of it.

Then later, in the grocery store, near the bell peppers and portabella mushrooms I saw Mr. Cerf and his wife opposite me in the aisle. "You're Vent Cerf!" I said, and he chuckled a bit. "Yes I am," he said, in that slightly uncomfortable "I hate that people know who I am," kind of way.

"Thanks for that Internet thing," I said.

Another chuckle from Mr. Cerf and he smiled and said: "You're welcome."

      Heh...great story, Rewl.

And great portrait, Joi...I can never seem to get portraits just right.

I predict that this will become the definitive Vint Cerf portrait.

Vint rules. He replied to an email of mine where I thanked him for the Internet, which made my day/year. I wish I'd met him near bell peppers though.

oh, so cool stories. Thanks for sharing. My time with him was last August. www.flickr.com/photos/gi/1254784228/ I consider myself utter lucky to have met him, we all enjoyed his talk so much... and to be able to actually make him a question was bliss.

Definitely, Susan said it above: He is the man. (well she said "that´s the guy"... why yes, indeed! ;-)

He should be make it for a Peace Nobel. He´s a missionary.

I met Mr. Cerf back in 97 or 98. (he kinda sounds like Dick Cavett)
He was giving a schpeel on (then) MCI's Internet services and also talked about the development of a protocol to be used for communicating between earth and moon stations.

I actually had the honor of working with Vint Cerf at MCIMail when i was starting out in the IT field back in 1976. Even back then he was so low-key and humble, you wouldn't know he was a VP. Of course, back then, there were only a select few in Washington, DC who were associated with Arpanet and most of them knew each other and had started their own companies. I just moved around from one company to another. Still run into him once in a while and talk about the good old days.
