Doctor's Gate, New Year's Day

Two-and-a-half hours of solid rain, and the path was a stream - but this view was well worth the drenching. An exhilarating start to the year!

Bill, Ali and Carey approaching the high point of the path, around 500 metres; the sky had cheered up a little by this point. That's the Shelf Brook at the bottom of the clough.

Oils on hardboard, painted circa 1937 by her friend the artist John Hutton. The landscape in the background is a reference to New Zealand, where they both grew up, and the whole composition is an homage to La Gioconda - a compliment that will not have been lost on my mum, who knew about art...
