Double Crested Cormorant on nest

Pigeon Island, Lake Ontario.

The island is off limits during the breeding season but I was accompanying a biologist from the Canadian Wildlife Service. I've made many trips to waterbird colonies over the years and it's always a fascinating experience....cormorants particularly have very primal qualities that reflect on their ancient lineage.
