Here's a neat trick I recently learned to make contrast and colors pop in Photoshop. Create a levels adjustment layer. Don't make any actual alterations except changing the blend mode to Overlay. Bang! You might have to tone it down (as I did in this shot) by reducing the opacity of the layer. Quick and easy, no expensive filters necessary.
