Shopping

Shopping by John Baird.
A night version of Joey's shot.

When I was a kid this sign was for Schmidt’s Grocery in Okemos, Michigan. At some point Barnes and Nobel moved into the aircraft hanger like store. They kept the sign, replacing the painted in groceries in the cart with books, and left much of the store interior intact. Now its a fairly bland athletic shoe store.

Sometime it would be fun to convert photos of these moving neon signs into animated GIFs... Don't the little wheels "spin" on this?

P.S. there's a Neon Signs Pool.

Hey, nice job. Looks like she needs that grocery cart to prop her up.

I think she's just stretching out, Joey! She's been standing up there for quite a while ;-)

One of my favorite childhood landmarks! The wheels do "spin," hence only two of three wheel sections being lit, and she switches which leg she's standing on--you can just see the unlit front leg. It was part of the deal, when the building was transferred away from the grocery store, that the sign would be preserved in perpetuity. It's one of few marks of that era in that area, and is considered locally (maybe officially?) as an historic landmark.

When I was a child, it bothered me immensely that she only had one leg.

Nah, I'm just very literal. Her legs switch slowly enough that it appears as though she might be hopping along in a weird sort of marionette fashion. But if they went faster, it would look freakily frenetic. Can't win.
