...the age of broken images. (It's what the graffiti says - can't really see it unless you view large).
I've had this shot in mind for a while - I saw the graffiti whilst looking for another one that (apparently, I still haven't found it) says "We all f*cking love joy division". It's in the tunnel that runs under the railway towards the Ritz. The arched doors with the stained glass in belong to an Italian restaurant with premises more or less opposite the Ritz.
Tricky shot to take - it's lit by streetlight, with a small amount of natural daylight coming in (you can just see that towards the left of the pic). Inspired by the graffiti, I pushed the ISO to 1600 and handheld the shot, trying a few conventional compositions (people beginning their journey into the pic) and eventually settling on this, with a blurred person leaving the frame as close to a "broken" image.
The sodium lighting gives this lovely amber colouration, and I really like the texture of the brick. A shot that also would definitely not have worked in mono.

Thanks stu :) This was the week I had
"Macintish Mill #2" as a
possibility as well - it was a tough call,
but I thought this was out of the ordinary
enough to make it worth entering.

Great atmosphere in this one John, the figure
to the left hand side really makes it.
Have you found the Joy Division graffiti
yet?

Hey dude, I am from Peru. Lived in Manchester
for two years.
It was a great surprise to find this photo
of the tunnel I had to cross on my way to the
University. If I am right, this place is
close to Lower Chatham St, isn't it?

Hi antroig,
I have more from around here too .
You're right about the location, Lower
Chatham Street is just a little way further
on, off Chester Street.
Thanks for your comment!

Hi John,
That´s a great coincidence. Honestly, this
discovery on flickr made me feel nostalgic
about my time in Manchester.
So, I decided to do a homage to this
tunnel:

Finally, would you mind if I use another of
your photos in my blog?
Cheers,

Antroig - which photo did you have in mind?
Depending on the pic, it's fine as long as
it goes on there unmodified from the versions
on flickr, that I'm credited as the
photographer, and we both understand that
copyright remains with me.

John,
I was thinking about this one:

As you can see in my previous post, I
clearly mention that the photo was taken by
you. With this one, the situation won't be
different.
Indeed the copyright remains with you,
mate!!!
Cheers,
A.
