Rolling Mist

Rolling Mist

I took this shot about a month ago whilst out walking one evening. There was a huge wall of sea mist over the Bristol Channel about a quarter mile off the coast. For once I had plenty of time to find a suitable spot and set up before the mist made land fall. When it it did it was forced up and over the edge of the valley before pouring down the sides. I decided to go for a long exposure to try and capture the movement. I used my B+W 10stop filter, which was probably a bit of an over kill as the light was fading fast and as a result I ended up with a longer exposure than I would have liked, 200 seconds. I was hoping for around 60 to 90 seconds to try and hold some of the detail in the mist but I think the end result is still quite cool.

Within a minute or so of taking this shot the mist rolled over me dropping the visibility down to only a few feet. Getting back to the car was interesting to say the least!!! :-)

Light Rain

Light Rain

Well its been a while since I last managed to post any shots as I have been moving house and have only just got around to sorting out my internet connection!

Sadly the camera hasn't been out of the bag much the past couple of months either, so I have some catching up to do.

This shot was taken on Monday evening. After much deliberation and starring out of the window I finally decided to drag my carcass up onto the hills, and boy am I glad I did!!
When I arrived at my location It was clear I was in for a treat. There were a lot of thick fast moving clouds that kept breaking just enough to let some beautiful shafts of light come through. As I looked out over the Bristol Channel I could see an unbelievable line of bright orange light on the horizon, but I soon realised that from where I was I would not be able to get a decent shot, as for one, the foreground hills looked to cluttered, and secondly the wide angle lens I had brought meant that the amazing light show looked light a distant speck throughout the view finder.

The only option I had was to set off on foot along the mile long trail that led to the cliff top. As I was walking I watched the clouds breaking as clear skies moved in from the east and I thought I had lost my chance. By the time I reached the point I was aiming for I was under clear blue skies, but further down the channel there was the remains of the thick belt of cloud. As I watched It almost looked as though the sky split clean in two as the shafts of light poured through. I managed to bag half a dozen shots before the cloud dispersed and normality returned.

Without a doubt one of the most satisfying shots I have taken for quite some time!

Another shot from this weekend on Minehead beach. I decided to go for a more soft washed out look with this one for a change.

Thanks for taking the time to visiting my photostream, all comments are greatly appreciated.

Taken on Minehead seafront last week. I've had my eye on this shot for a while now but it is not often that the tide comes in high enough to reach the steps.
It had been a miserable wet day and I went out in the late afternoon with fairly low expectations. However, I was rewarded with a fantastic sunset as the clouds broke just as the sun dipped below the horizon.

The light was fading really fast so I only had one chance to get the shot. I used my ND110 filter and when I setup a test shot I calculated the exposure to be about six or seven minutes but I decided to extended this to 16 minutes to be on the safe side. I It was surprisingly still which meant that even with such a long exposure there was very little cloud movement.

Same location as the last shot but taken from about 400 meters to the east with a telephoto lens. Tried to go for a more muted tone with this one to give a different feel.
