The family that computes together, stays together

Newer Older

This is my new work area. This is where the magic happens. :-) At 10.5 feet long, it's nearly 28 square feet of total desk surface.

It is a thing of beauty.

I put this setup together with the idea that the whole family could share it. I spend so much time at home now, it's a great way for me to get work done and help the girl with her homework at the same time. The kids use the machine at the far end, a Shuttle SFF with AMD guts running Ubuntu Linux 5.10 (Breezy). The lovely and talented wife uses this spot as home base for her Windows laptop. And of course I've got my little slice of office heaven here at this end dual booting Ubuntu Linux 6.10 (Edgy, pictured) and (infrequently) Windows XP.

Personally, I have a hard time concentrating with my kids around. I can do busywork, browsing for info, but trying to code algorithms or debug something gnarly, I need to have the kids away and/or the headphones on with some form of pulsating music to keep me energized and free of distraction. I actually have 2 offices in the house: upstairs in our bedroom retreat for silence, solitude and a white board, the other downstairs where my wife also works and the kids can hang out in. I pay bills there, research stocks, play games, watch TV on the TV tuner, etc. down there. I call it "ambient" family time.
