This is truly the most fascinating conversation. So far being able to "know" people from their moronic confrontations on the internet has done me no wrong. I suppose I made the statement to express my frustrations with the blatant objectification of the woman in the image they chose to use to advertise their product. As a woman, it offends me, and what is the internet for, but voicing opinions on something like this?

Indeed that woman does not seem the least bit distraught over being "objectified" for the sake of selling some nutritionally-vapid burgers of unknown origin... i imagine she even felt rather amused after viewing the check she received for the use of her face in the ad. this of course assuming she isnt a computer generated figment of the ad company pitchman's collective fantasy. If it had been a man making that same face at the burger would gay rights groups be up in arms over it?

The only funny comment on this thing is trippar.

Hank - if you're really curious about how this ad is sexist, I suggest doing some research into feminist theory. Let's assume the photo is a real woman who got some money for posing. That doesn't change the fact that women are sexually exploited and violated in epidemic proportions and that ads like these, some will argue, contribute to the underlying attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate the commonly acted upon beliefs that its ok to rape, berate, and abuse women. Burger King isn't really the problem. It's wide-spread ignorance about women's experiences and the devaluing of their perspectives. Often times, women participate and perpetuate this problem too.

My reading of the photo: I think the woman is supposed to look fake, like a doll. It's advertising 101 that ads use symbols and subliminal messaging, if you agree with that, you may agree with the rest:

I argue the ad is not only obviously evoking a blow job, but that the woman's ambiguity - she might be real or might be a doll - is intentional and is designed to evoke the fantasy of a completely submissive woman who can be used sexually in any way imaginable. While this is a totally valid sex fantasy, we have to acknowledge that the ad exists within a social context and that this ad also evokes the sexual objectification of women. In some contexts, like a heated sexual moment, women may want to be a sex objects, but a lot of times women are treated like sex objects against their will. I think that's the reality that many feminists are struggling against.

Thanks for asking Hank. I hope you continue to educate yourself about so-called women's issues because they're really everyone's issues.

geeze.. what's with all the hating? Boycotting a place for bigotry against a gender, race, religion, etc is a perfectly valid reason to do so. Boycotting burger king for sexism is not only okay but admirable... there may be lots of reasons not to eat there in the first place (i'm vegan after all) but if you have no qualms with something except that they're discriminating then what's the problem there? Although to photo envy- pretty much every burger place is sexist.. hardees doesn't even try to cover it up and who was it that had the "yes, i'm a man" commercials? although the fact that so many people are actually encouraging sexism shows how far we are in actually overcoming it.

You cannot be serious. Can you people even see the words you're typing? It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. No one is being objectified, there was no need to bring up rape, and if the girl didn't want to have her face on the picture she didn't need to take the job. This is just an image; you're inserting the context under it. You're making it sexist by giving that label.

This is extremism. You're taking basic gender studies to an absolute extreme to support your own view of the world and sexual relations within. It's the goddamn internet, people; we're over this shit years ago. Political correctness is for politicians and people on the news. Just enjoy the damn joke, or don't. I don't think it's funny, but the point is the same.

A lot of the issues hank and co have with the whole objectification argument (if I may put words in to his mouth) is that it relies upon it's own degrading assumptions that men are mindless sex crazed morons who are incapable of both treating women with deserved respect and fantasy.

Assuming that this ad will encourage men to treat women badly is about as insulting as certain individuals who still assume less of women in general as they are both premised around the assumptions that either gender is lacking in some basic human capability.

The second point being that considering all comments calling for a boycott of Burger King have been accompanied by statements that these same people would never eat there to begin with makes the entire post seem disingenuous.

Hooray for women's rights and all that, but there are certain absurdities here that just don't sit right.

I have a thought. Maybe we are all sexual objects, and we are all people. Maybe objectification is a good thing, and moralizing about it is actually wrong. It's the one place where feminists and crazy nutjob christians meet to piss of the sane world.

Yes you may tincow... and thank you for getting the joke. iwd1982: while youre comments were clear and concise and probably came as close anyone will ever come to unlocking the mystery of motive behind penis.envy's original comment, your logic is flawed by the simple fact that it is almost completely void of rational thought. its a vicious circle you and the like-minded run amok in, which directly correlates to why humans as a species are doomed. all the same i hold no ill-will towards you for it because you cant help it. thats just how you were made. and thats the most important joke of all.

let the record reflect i never and would never condone the idea of women being objectified, exploited, raped and/or violated. all women have the potential strength and fortitude to stand up for themselves as individuals just as any man does. What do you all mean by the word objectification? While we're on the subject, what about the word feminist? Are you sure you're using the terms correctly?

With that, I'd like to point out the obvious (—and it may come as a shock to some of you):women give blowjobs. That's right! Many women on the planet Earth perform fellatio on occasion (sometimes more than healthy).

Tell me what is "incorrect" about the image when you consider that it jestingly depicts an act fully present (and desirable) in the "real world." Better yet: does it make sense to call an image incorrect or correct at all?

Also, I agree with whoever said the "woman" pictured is a Real Doll—at least, I'm pretty sure that's not a real woman.

Sex is obviously bad (hence why sexISM is bad), and any attempt at referring to sex is sexist and demeaning to the woman involved and indeed all women everywhere.

There is no such thing as consensual sex, it's all rape of the woman's spirit and dignity. After all, it's the MALE penetrating the WOMAN, it's obviously insulting to the female. In a not-sexist world, the woman would be penetrating the man a full 50% of the time.

We should never, ever celebrate sex and strap-ons should be issued to all sexually active women so that men know what it's like!!!!

Saying that the woman has been objectified is a completely wrong interpretation of the image. It's the *burger* that's been objectified. It's on the right side of the frame, so in the western mind we start on the left, see the woman's reaction, and our eyes are drawn to the burger. The burger's implied motion points back to the woman's open mouth which implies the sexual imagery.

I also don't think she's going to have the oral capacity to deep throat the thing.

I think that anyone thinking that implied oral sex is degrading the person performing the act is missing one important fact: the giver is the one with the power.

so then someone could say you are wrong for interpreting someone elses interpretation of an object or situation as being wrong simply because the idea of wrong is interpreted differently in every individual. of course that doesnt make you or the other person any more right or any more wrong than anyone else, unless you or they think the other is.
