Joey in Kodachrome by Joey Harrison

Joey in Kodachrome

[Photo and narrative by my mother]

Joey's laughing it up with his friends, all well-stuffed at the time! The joke must have been a good one judging from his happy expression. The slide says he was 14 weeks old. Can it be that he was holding himself up like that at 3 1/2 months? Maybe! He was an early walker too.
I was cycling back and forth between Kodachrome in a little Leica IIIf and Verichrome in a reflex camera, which I could then develop and print. I say "could," but there was seldom time for it at the exact point in life when I had such a good subject.

Hi Grandma, good-bye by Joey Harrison

Hi Grandma, good-bye

[Photo and narrative by my mother]

Joey's grandmother Cornelia had been committed for care due to her early-onset Alzheimer's. Here she is, while at home with my dad for a visit. He had dressed her, and brought her to see her new grandson. Always a good mother, holding Joey delighted her and caused all of her good instincts to return. But Joey was never to see his grandma again.

The chocolate black walls were ideal for showing off our latest enlargements. Centered on this wall is a 16x20 of Joey's cousin Kimberly, Dotty and Chet's adorable baby daughter.

Showing Joey off by Joey Harrison

Showing Joey off

[Photo and narrative by my mother]

In May of 1954 Joey's Uncle Casey made a trip to Michigan from his home in New Orleans to see his new nephew. Caught in my uniform at work that day, we only needed to climb the curving stairway to our apartment above the doctor's office.

Decorating Joey's nursery had been such fun. We bought top-of-the-line baby furniture from Emden's on Jefferson Avenue near Fulton. When the painter was asked for a white room, he said he had NEVER painted a room all white and suggested some nice baby colors. But white it was, and the one large window was curtained in billowy clouds of about 100 yards of cheesecloth.

As I've mentioned previously, my mother took many self-portraits using a tripod and auto-timer. On other occasions she had my dad trip the shutter after she framed the shot and set the exposure. -- Joey
