Pack Rat BluesThrowing stuff away is more fun now that I got me a shredder. Sue and I spent a weekend in London in January '98. I stayed the rest of the week for work; Sue went home. But she wrote me a letter in this pad while I was at work and before she left for the airport. Candles. Plastic Easter eggs that we bought to put candy in for Easter 2005. Stuff from high school (Sep. '84 - June '87). I didn't go through this box. I had to get out the air filter because of all the dust! Gas fireplace that we've never turned on. It looks so old and decrepit that we're afraid to. Wedding gift. I eventually filled two more bags like this with shredded paper. I could probably fill a dozen more. At least. Photograph of a couple of A-6Es, signed by all the guys I worked with one summer at Grumman during college. Box of stuff I'm saving. I managed to empty nine boxes and crates. Unfortunately, there are sixteen boxes left. And that doesn't include our attic. All the unwritten post cards I found I put into in this bag. Contains a ton of old problem sets and notes from grad school (Aug. '91 - Aug. '93). I don't understand any of it anymore. A bag of matchbooks. Contains an old Sega and some game cartridges. Playing "Sonic The Hedgehog" would have been more fun than cleaning. Contains four more (full) boxes. A flyer about the Olympics I got in Atlanta in April '93. There are *two* sets of fireplace pokers here... for a gas fireplace... that we never use. Loveseat we bought from Jennifer Convertibles in August '96 for our apartment (there's a matching sofabed, too). A few years ago, we saw these exact same sofas in the exact same upholstery featured on "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy". In the "before" part of the episode... A flyer from Magnetic Hill in Moncton, New Brunswick. We drove through there during our honeymoon in July 1996. Rook cards One of about a hundred old Princeton Alumni Weeklys I found. (I threw most of them away.) Old bicycle chain. Old TV Guide with The Simpsons on the cover. New kitchen cabinet doors that needed replacing after they got soaked after a repair to the new bathroom above it went awry... Stupid expensive vacuum cleaner keeps breaking. It works great when it's not broken, though. Line printer printouts from grad school. This garbage can should be more full, no? A transcript of our college salutatorian's speech. In Latin. A negative disc from an old Kodak Disc camera Contains priceless jewels (not) Bare carpet! How many coats of paint are on this brick? Impossible to tell... Empty crates (for now) Empty crate (for now)
In the middle of a vain attempt to clean my basement.
