armonk, new york

armonk, new york by joe holmes.
can anyone identify this creature?

update: identified! by ben as a hummingbird clearwing moth.

Its wings beat at several hundred times a minute -- this image was shot at 1/800 and failed to freeze the motion.

No, the South African Flying Teetse Stinging Butterfly is bright blue and three to four feet wide.

I thought the SAFTSB was a mottled pink and prefered stale beer?

This is ironic. Saw this on Boing Boing, and use flickr a lot lately. I just saw one of these on some flowers in our yard a few weeks ago! I live in Saint Albans, Vermont. I have never seen one before that and was intrigued. At first I thought it was a hummingbird, but it was too small. I figured it was some type of moth, but forgot about it and never investigated it.....
