No tripod: I pressed the camera lens against the hotel room window. That kept the camera steady AND elminated all reflections off the window.

Lightning is like fireworks -- since the sky is black, leave the shutter open until the Big Event, then close it. This image was a 2 second exposure. Once I saw the strike, I let go of the release.

Nikon Coolpix 4500 at 9.6mm with the wide angle lens attached, f/5.7 and ISO 100. 8/21/03 at 11:19 pm.

I got about eleven lightning shots that night, this one being by far the best. Some of my exposures were as long as 8 seconds. My arms got tired.

this pic is really impressive!!

but nice to see, that someone else also uses my way of taking lightning pictures!

i "only" have a sony dsc-v1 therfore i have to take a shuttertime of 30 sek
and when the big boom comes, i just take a pice of hard paper to cover the lens :)
i know it's rather ghetto style, but it works :)

In fact, my wife and kids and I had just taken a small boat from the island in less than an hour before that photo. It had already started raining, but no lightning at that point...

awesome shot!! that is incredible that you are releasing when you see the strike!! great reflexes.

my method is pot luck! use 5 second exposures and hope to catch a strike while the shutters open,( only one good catch so far)
