That's a lot of plums!

That's a lot of plums! by Joanna Silva.
The funny thing is tat for the past 6+ years we've lived here, these plums have been yellow, and not particularly sweet. This year, it seems they have been cross-pollinated with the tree of the neighbors behind us. These are sweet and addictive eaten straight off the tree, but also make a yummy jam. I got 12 jars (and one extra for the fridge) out of these.

***Anyone also from the SF Bay area know where to go strawberry, raspberry or blackberry picking?? ***

ooh, these are so beautiful! I had a friend when I lived in England who used to slow simmer halved plums and serve them over toasted brioche with cream. so, so yummy! Looks like you got lucky with that cross pollination ;)

I had a secret blackberry picking spot in Golden Gate park near 9th and Fulton. I am clueless where to pick in my area now, any insights?

Oh my goodness! What a bounty.
I have been contemplating putting a plum tree in our garden. I think you may have convinced me. :)

I wish I knew where to go! You would think that California would have oodles of berry picking opportunities, but....???

These plums are tiny! If I got my own tree, I would opt for a larger kind of plum. I had to cook them a bit until they got soft, then push spoonfuls through a colander, fishing out the pits by hand. Then back on the stove...It took me about 3 hours from start to finish, but I think next year it will be quicker.

gorgeous plums. do you ever do a plum clafoutis? we ate them all summer long.

the best place for berry picking is swanton berry farm on the coast north of santa cruz. they have mostly strawberries but also blackberries and ollalieberries. we go every year in july for the ollalies. we mostly just eat them and freeze them. and then i buy $10 jam flats and make strawberry jam. you'll love it. they have a great farm stand too.
