Happy New Year 2010! by Jnarin

Happy New Year 2010!

Yeah, finally a tiger picture! :D Celebrating New Year's Eve with a tiger photo! :)

2009 was a good to me - A few highlights:
* Participation Bangalore Bird Race
* Acquisition of my prized possession - Canon 1D M3
* Lots of Birding
* New friends
* Participation in Bangalore Photography Club's Frames of Mind 2009 (Lit the lamp!)
* New enemies
* Highlight of the year being able to spend a week in the forests of central India photographing tigers - A long awaited dream come true. :)

I haven't been regular on Flickr the last few months - Hope to make a few changes to that in 2010.

About the photograph - This is a 4 year old male tiger. Our driver and guide had a good idea as to where he might be and emerge. Alas, the firs time he made his appearance, we were a tad too late. Got to see him disappearing into the jungle! Not to worry, our experts knew where he might be off to, and took us around 3 KMs form there. We waited there for a while, and he did make his appearance - took a dip in a pond at a distance (despite the cold weather), and eventually made his grand appearance. For close to 15 minutes, he was on the tracks, walking majestically. Eventually, a Barking Deer hidden in the bushes let out an alarm call and he went off the tracks.

Wish you all a Happy New Year 2010 folks! May all your dreams come true! :)

Addendum : This photograph is uncropped. PP involved some basic color correction. :) All the 10 gorgeous megapixels! :)

Scientific Name : Coracias benghalensis

This was my catch of the day. Spotted this bird on the way back to the resort after morning safari. The bird was very friendly, and did not budge at the sight of four photographers. :-)

Shot at Bandhavgarh.

Read about Day 2 here.

Plum-headed Parakeet taking off.. by Jnarin

Plum-headed Parakeet taking off..

Plum-headed Parakeet (female) taking off from it's rather high perch :)

Scientific Name : Psittacula cyanocephala

Shot at Bandhavgarh. A bunch of these guys were rather noisy and creating a racket. Stopped the vehicle to get a few photographs of them.

The grey head indicates that this is a female. Males have bright red head.

Tiger Cubs! by Jnarin

Tiger Cubs!

Back from my big trip. Had an excellent time out in the wilderness. :-) Trip was very eventful, with a lot of tiger sightings.

Here are two four month old tiger cubs, that we saw at the end of the safari on Day 1, at Bandavgarh Tiger Reserve.

The sun had set, and it was getting darker by the minute. Bumped the ISO up to as much as I could, and clicked this one.

Pretty interesting to observe the cubs, who were playing around (there were three of them jumping around), and later came down to rest in an area which was not easy to see from the 'road'. The moment they sensed us, both sat upright. Got a few shots, and we left.

I will be writing about the experience that I went through during the course of the trip. Do read about it here :-)

Think for a moment... by Jnarin

Think for a moment...

.. what we are doing to our environment.

It is not ours alone - there are other beautiful creatures that share it with us. Most areas that attract migrating birds are getting polluted with plastic. When we can make efforts to pack things carefully to take them with us, we can bring the 'waste' back and dispose it off safely. Everyone knows how tough, expensive and time taking a 'cleanup' is.

Manchinbele area (like the other lakes I frequent) is currently contaminated with broken glass pieces, plastic, and other garbage.

This one photograph posted here may not make much of a difference in contributing to awareness, but spreading the word will! If not now, it will eventually! Use less plastic!

I am off for a while to see tigers in the wild - A dream of mine for a long time now. Would consider my trip a big success if I get to see even one tiger in the wild. :-)

Take care folks! Protect our environment!

And for the curious, the bird is a Spot-Billed Duck (Anas poecilorhyncha) and the beautifully blurred small bird in the foreground is a White-Browed Wagtail (Motacilla maderaspatensis)
