Love locks

A tradition was started in Rome where lovers attach a padlock to a bridge and throw the keys into the river (Tevere) to lock-in thier love. This is the begginings of the Florentine tradition we saw when we were out and about

I asked how the tradition started and was told it had started with a scene from a movie. Any Idea?
