- chocolate chocolate cupcake = nothing notable other than its dryness.
- vanilla cupcake = frosting was okay, the cake itself was only mediocre. pretty much a grocery-store cupcake.
- chocolate with peanut butter = actually moist, but the frosting seemed to be peanut butter whipped with butter and vegetable oil?... kinda turned me off.
- red velvet cupcake = bland cake, redeemed by its frosting.
- lemon cupcake = EXCELLENT frosting, HORRIBLE cake. the cake tasted like lemon-scented Lysol!
- coconut cupcake = i couldn't handle more than a crumb. it was completely dry, pretty flavorless, and the coconut ruined the frosting.
- carrot cupcake = plain. dry. sad.
- chocolate vanilla cupcake = decent.
Toast, assorted cupcakes
after the food-food.
me: Could we please get one of every cupcake -
server: To-go, sure.
me: No, all on one plate. For here :)
*sigh* they all looked so good, but turned out extremely bad! i was very disappointed. especially since the food-food was so great.
sampled them all with my friend, who agreed they were the utter opposite of tasty.

Aww...they sound so disappointing!
Sorry to hear that your excitement was such a let-down:(

jules: i know! but nope, not one was happiness-inspiring. my friend and i considered ourselves lucky that those were not the first cupcakes we'd ever had. had they been, we might have forever thought cupcakes were in general sucky! hehe :P
yvonne: they were very disheartening! but it's okay, at least my curiosity is finally quenched and i now know to stick to everything on the menu except the cupcakes :)

I know Toast used to use the Magnolia bakery recipe...maybe they aren't anymore?
jleighb (86 months ago | reply)
melika: i don't ko what's worse - a pretty cupcake that taste horrible, or an aesthetically-challenged cupcake that tastes horrible... lol
chrishawn: i agree, not a good thing at all!
Hilary74: if they are still using the Magnolia recipe, i have to say they're abusing it...

Wow... they look so good, but.... aren't.
Life is like that. Sometimes your cupcake is squished but perfect, and sometimes it's beautiful but horrible-tasting. Ah, life. It's a cupcake all in one.

Cupcakes are the kind of food that, when they are good they are very very good, and when they're bad, they're horrid. You can dress them up and make them look all photogenic, but if you skimp on the ingredients, eg. substitute margarine or (horrors!) vegetable oil for butter, use fake vanilla essence instead of the real thing, low-grade chocolate, etc., they will not taste good. BTW I loved that episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" where the teams made cupcakes. The men's team forgot to add SUGAR to a whole batch of theirs, then after baking them someone had the bright idea of drizzling sugar syrup over the tops of them. Problem solved, right? Wrong! Cannot imagine how ghastly they must have tasted. However, cupcakes, even foul-tasting ones, are a lot of fun to photograph, draw, and paint; my art class is doing something like that right now, after the style of Wayne Thibaud. This photo would be just his style, lots of different colours and textures going on.
