- Nombre científico o latino: Calendula officinalis
- Nombre común o vulgar: Caléndula, Marigold, Maravilla, Corona de rey, Gauchas, Flamenquilla.
- Familia: Asteraceae.
- Origen: regiones mediterráneas.
- Planta que se cultiva como anual (se desecha después de florecer).
- Forma pequeñas matas de unos 40 ó 50 cm de altura.
- Las hojas son lanceoladas, de un color verde fuerte. Posee un follaje aromático.
- Las flores forman cabezuelas grandes con relación al tamaño de la planta, de colores amarillo, naranja, albaricoque y mezcla de las anteriores.
- La floración dura casi todo el año, depende de la siembra, pero sobre todo en verano.
- La Caléndula doble enana variada: florece en verano. Sus flores son dobles, variadas y alcanzan una altura de 25 cm.
- Los pétalos tienen aplicaciones culinarias y medicinales.
- Tienen numerosas propiedades: anti inflamatorias, antisépticas, calmantes, antibióticas, y para tratar indigestiones, úlceras estomacales y conjuntivitis.
- Solía utilizarse en la cocina como azafrán del pobre (da color y sabor).
- También se popularizó como remedio de herbolario para diversas dolencias, incluido el sarampión.
- Para jardín y maceta.
- Es especialmente indicada para arriates, en combinación con plantas perennes vigorosas.
- Luz: a pleno sol. Tolera la semisombra.
- Resistencia al frío: tolera hasta -3°C.
- Riegos regulares durante el verano hasta que dejen de florecer. Durante la floración no descuide el riego.
