Google Maps, now with satellite imagery

Look at the shadow on that monument- should be able to figure out time of day of the photo from that.
George on the phone.
Looks like a different shadow angle from the Washington Monument. ;) (Also, I really want the speech bubble shadow to reflect what time it is at the given location. Night is a prob tho...)
asshole on the phone
my, how the national cathedral has grown

Satellite also works on directions, I just mapped my daily commute and "flew" the route using the arrow keys - works like a charm!

Does anybody know why they pixelate out the Capitol? They do it on terra-server too...security is the obvious explanation, but why not the White House as well?

Yeah, but notice that the roof detail of the two buildings that adjoin the White House are obscured. It's gotta be security, but I too am confused by the ommission of 1600 Penn..

Or the Pentagon for that matter. If you look closely, the roof of the White is also pixelated, but it's done in a terracotta color to mimic the roof's real shade. Most likely due to the array of antennas, dishes, and turrets on the WH roof and surrounding buildings.

Some military, nuclear, and government sites are obscured in other cities as well.

I was hoping this would be the recent mapping.

This is years old.

Mapquest had this for a long time (and you could zoom in closer) but not as cool as this. How in hell do they layer the route line over the map?

This isn't any scarier than what's been available online for years from Terraserver and other services... but their interface sure makes it more fun to use. After they released the Maps beta, I was hoping they'd incorporate it with the assets they acquired with Keyhole. Looks like they're well on their way.

I'm not sure of that, I downloaded a Keyhole trial before they were bought out by Google, and the map of my area in that was older than what they're using there.

pv: The White House roof _has_ been obscured. They've simply left the white edges.

I'm pretty sure the pixelation is there to hide anti-aircraft guns. (Insert Debbie Downer wahwah here.)
