A Casa da Árvore [Tree House]

simply a breathtaking b&w!
Coca-Cola, the official beverage of decadence and decay.
A Casa da Árvore [Tree House] by Jim Skea.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The last Brazilian president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, used to live in this house as a kid. His 8 years of government (particularly the last 4) were marked by widespread claims of corruption among his own party and his political allies. Investigations made into allegations were "closed away in drawers" (engavetadas) by the Procurator General, Geraldo Brindeiro, so often that he gained the nickname Engavetador Geral da República ("Filer-Away General of the Republic"). Public companies were sold off for one third of their initially announced values. However, by sweeping everything under the carpet, Fernando Henrique was able to present a clean face to the outside world.

Meanwhile, like the portrait of Dorian Gray, his childhood home slowly decayed....

Best seen 'On Black ad there are some interesting details in the large and original sizes....

Thanks, Lot. The place has been abandoned since 2003, when the owners died. Obviously, even at that time, the tree had (literally) become an integral part of the house.

Thanks, tricky. The toning is a simple cool grey duotone.

Jim Skea  Pro User  says:

@JBAT: it's not really a vertical panorama (though that's pssoible to do) but rather a horizontal panorama made from portrait-orientated photos, if that makes sense. The reason I did it like that, because of a fence around the building, that was the only way to get the house into the frame easily.

@pixelstains: thanks. It's "18th century eclectic" architecture. I don't think the tree is part of the original plans =0)

Well it wouldn't expect that, so that's why I filled you in on the history (which is crucial to the photo).

Personally, even if it's just for cultural differences, I don't believe that a picture can always stand alone without some explanation.

Even when you go to an art or photo exhibition, particularly if the artist/photographer is breaking rules or pushing boundaries, there will probably be a leaflet with the artist's biography and their intentions to put the work in context. All I'm doing is putting this photo in context for those who don't know its history.

i like the subject, but you barfed all over it with your holgafication. the banding in the sky, the whacked out distortion, and the oddly gray contrast smack this great old building right across the facade with a bare knuckled fist and knock its loose, rotting teeth to the ground.

great subject
but low contrast (hardly a 3d detail texture feeling),
the tilted side (argh! that's so easy in postprocessing)
and the close crop/framing make this let me say:
do it again!

Oi, Jim !!! Deu ontem no Globo-on-line :

A Defesa Civil municipal condenou o imóvel.
