Easter Island
EASTER ISLAND: Moai at the quarry on Easter Island in the Pacific.
One of our great stops on the Around the World jet trip with National Geographic Expeditions in January.
Shot with two SB800's on PW's, one to the left out of picture light
face of the big Moai. Other one hidden behind the big guy lighting up
the Moai on the right. Full CTO on both of them. You can see more at

are you sure is evening and not morning?. These Moai at Rano Raraku face East
JC Richardson (49 months ago | reply)
Henry,
Thanks for adding your comment. Indeed, it is evening and those particular Moai at the quarry do face West, or towards the setting sun, whatever direction that is on Easter Island in January. (Northwest? Southwest?) Anyway,
Thanks,
Jim

Great use of flashes, it would never have occurred to me to do that and the results are awesome

Beautifully lit, well done.

Grumpysumpy, thanks for the comment. Coming from someone who has seen and photographed a lot of great places I'm honored! So Hornby Lighthouse is nice, eh?

Hello Jim!
I was google imaging a pic of Easter Island for one of my Anthropology professors at Wichita State and ran across this incredible image. Imagine my surprise when I realized it was Jim from Lindsborg. You wouldn't know me from Adam, but my wife and I stopped into your studio when you first opened in "Little Sweden".
I left my job at the phone company three years ago and am about to enter WSU's grad program for a masters in cultural anthropology. Your pics really get me jonesing to get out there and see the world! I need to learn how to use my Lumix camera, but that's another story. Perhaps we'll stop by again sometime.
Cheers,
Ben
P.S. Don't mean to confuse. This is my wife's flickr account. :)

Ben, (acgirl),
Great to hear from you. What a "Small World" tale! We'll add that to the Small World page on Facebook if you don't mind. And wow! Cultural anthropology sounds like a lot of fun, actually. And.... it's one of those "growth fields" just like small town art galleries and magazine photojournalism. Good luck and stop in again at Small World.

Cracking. Good skills with the lights, but the composition's brilliant overall. And what a subject!
Just booked tickets to Chile, thinking about heading out to the Island for a week.... Your pictures are kind of making it an easy decision!
JC Richardson (43 months ago | reply)
Old Not Bold, you'll have a good time working the images there. Be aware, however, that there are a limited number of venues to shoot. The quarry, the one big row of moai and the once by the ocean near town is about the major extent of it. But it's a great story and not everybody gets there. Good luck and thanks for the nice words about my picture.

Yeah, the maps look like a small place, but it's got to be worth a trip! Will make sure I post the pictures if I do make it. Thanks for the reply!

Gorgeous picture! Easter Island is by far the most mysterious and exciting destination I went to, and your picture renders it really good!

Amazing image! The photos of the Moai have been haunting my imagination ever since I was a child and first saw them (in the first atlas book my parents bought me, btw). Going to Easter Island some day is my biggest dream. First thing on my Bucket list and if it happens so, that I have accomplished only one of the items, I hope it's this one.
Thank you for highlighting this unique world beauty and sharing it! I hope you don't mind me posting the image on my blog in the Picture of the Day category, which I'm intending to keep updated daily. No credit taken, as you can see for yourself:
