Batavia Bridge
Bridge to Island Park in Batavia Illinois. I can see now why suspension bridges are inherently unstable, without a lot of extra engineering. Just my walking across this bridge set it to some serious wobbling.
I've read a little about building suspension bridges (Golden Gate and Brooklyn) and engineers DO have to do a lot of extra stuff to keep the wobbling down. There have been some spectacular failures because of the vibrations. An early bridge in Cincinnati came down in the 19th century and one in Tacoma came down in 1940. Obviously, they didn't do it for this bridge, but it really demonstrates the problem. November 2005 e051125a048a-fsk See more Batavia Area Pictures at Batavia Illustrated. Between you and I, we are doing a pretty good job of covering this park. My goal someday is to catch a picture of the very rare JimFrazier in the wild, out taking pictures. :)
