Kate and I were heading west from Kayenta along US 160 when we passed a Peabody coal mine. Then we noticed railroad tracks and realized that there was catenary wire too. I wasn't expecting a railroad in this part of the world, and certainly not an electric railroad! I did some research that night and discovered that this is an isolated railroad running between the Peabody Coal mine and the power station in Page, AZ. They electrified because it was cheaper to do this than bring in diesel fuel. We ARE talking about an electric utility - they kinda got electricity lying around. The BM&LP is a railroad "island" out in the middle of the desert. All of their rolling stock and locomotives have to come in by road, if you can imagine that.

BM & LP railroad runs at 50 kV. That's why there are these large insulators the catenary wires are suspended on.
