02.CHE POSTER1968.jpg

02.CHE POSTER1968.jpg by jimfitzpix.
One of the many versions I did back in 1968. It was cheaper to draw up a new one and post it, to whatever revolutionary movement needed it, than to get it photographed. In those days half of Europe was under fascist dictatorships (Franco, Salazar, the Greek junta and the like) so I was glad to help f**** them over.

Hi Jim, am I missing something here, one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, here on flickr and posted by its creator.

and no comments?

Real, palpable, culturally significant, yet quietly unnoticed.

I don't know what to say, except perhaps bravo and congratulations to you of course.

Great, man!!! The Irish kid rules!!!! You also helped our people in Brrazil, Agertina, Chile to fight against ours dictatoships.

Nowadays, this icon has a huge influence in South America, used as a symbol against capitalism, US, globalization and so on.

It's really nice to kown you and your work here in Flickr.

Hi Rob. I have never made much of a fuss about this one graphic but I am very proud of it.
Hi Ivan. Yep, we are also very proud of the Irish who fought to liberate Latin America. Ever heard of the San Patricios who switched sides and fought the American army invading Mexico? -all Irish or Irish-American.
I also did a poster of Raoul Walsh way back.

Jim, I've always adored your Celtic art, and when I found out you were the artist who turned a great photo into what is arguably the greatest iconic portrait graphic ever, I was amazed and delighted.

Hi Jim..

I never realised, to my shame, that this global iconic image was created by you. Not until I heard a discussion on RTE Radio One this morning. I was amazed..and very proud that a fellow Irishman had created one of, if not THE most famous image on the planet.

Have always loved your work..and this is just the icing on the cake.

Dia Dhuit Jim,
Its fantastic to find your own Flickr page; I didn't believe it at first. Thought someone is taking the piss.

I have a frame work of Korda's picture sitting in my living room and I have always admired your version of the picture; the colours, the contrast, the effect; it makes the "revolution" stand out.

Hats off to you for making it world famous.

Regards,
Hari

I have to concur with other comments left on here, I've spent pretty much the whole day browsing your stream and it suddenly became apparent from the Celtic art and the affiliated Che pictures that you were the artist. I was in awe of your work to begin with, now I am speechless too. Well done!

Hi Jim,

One could be forgiven about being proud of creating the iconic Che poster in 1968, but certainly not now, 41 years later, as we know so much more about the true nature of this man, this murderer.

"...In those days half of Europe was under fascist dictatorships (Franco, Salazar, the Greek junta and the like) so I was glad to help f**** them over."

Well, in none of the cases you mentioned did democracy and a better life come from the likes of Che, nor from anyone even remotely like him. Nor for that matter in Brazil, Argentina or Chile, as "Ivan" contends. And Jim, I'm afraid that it was not your Che image that hastened the demise of these dictators.

Sorry, that's just the way it is. Graphically, I think you're the bees knees, BTW.

Che was no murderer.
Try nailing mass-murderers George Bush, Dick Cheney or Rumsfeld, Wolfovitz, Perle, etc., who slaughtered over 150,000 souls in Iraq in an illegal war. Or the CIA torturers and rapists. Or their opposites in Russia/Checnya.
The CHE image was just a way of getting up their noses and showing dissent. Stlll is. Try wearing it in Florida, Bejing or outside Moscow. Or Google Ruben Brodsky a young Jewish kid who was tortured and murdered by the Argentine Junta. His crime? Being a Jew and wearing a CHE t-shirt.
Thanks for the genuine compliment on my work. We agree to differ.

Hey there. I just wanted to say that arguing that a murderer's enemy killed more people than him, does not make that murderer less of, well, a murderer. Is just not a valid argument.

If you want to spit in the face of established powers, then do it with conscience, not with icons. Some people has been killed just because they were wearing a Che t-shirt, but backing up the Che doesn't make much sense, he killed people just because he considered them enemyes, and I don't mean in battle, I'm talking about the executions.

Pardon me if my writing has mistakes, I don't fully speak english.

Hi alejoro70. Your english is a whole lot better than my spanish. Revolutions are always accompanied by bloodshed but what other way was there to free Cuba? The people had no say, no vote, to oust Batista and the north american CIA/Mafia who ran the place.

I am no way a communist - because of past of my country, with about 50 years of communist dictatorship, I know what they can do in "people's" name (aka, Orwell was right about commies, even that he never lived in communist country) - but I have to say, I like this picture, this more or less icon.

I would not have wanted to live iunder any of those repressive dictatorships. Don't like NATO/US warmongers/mass murderers either.
