Crack Lighting

Crack Lighting by Jimbo3DC.
You have track lighting, I have Crack Lighting. It's been going on several nights in a row now into early May 2007.

Westminster & 10th Streets, NW DC.

Now I'm curious about this program: how effective are the crack lights, what warrants their nightly placement, and what is the name of this BrightLight unit of the DC Metropolitan Police Unit called? What was the crime (violent, I assume) that spurred this? I've inquired at the DC.gov website to find out.

How is this supposed to work? Are drug addicts scared of bright lights? Is there an ex-girlfriend of some cop in one of the houses? If dealers are using this street won't the dealers just go somewhere else? If there was some horrible crime why don't they just arrest the person, they are certainly not going to return if there is that much lighting.

Oh yeah - they do this every month or so up where we live (@14th and Girard NW). Usually a response to rising violence in the area.

It's great, b/c when the lights go up, the whole block and those around it cease suspicious activity. I think it must work kinda like a social version of those automated stock market cut-offs. Slows down "business" and disrupts the flow of things when a block starts trending violent.
