Ann Arbor News (typography) by jhoweaa

Ann Arbor News (typography)

The Ann Arbor District Library had a photowalk today. They had an interesting panel of local photographers talking about their work and then we headed out to shoot things around town. I'm just going through my shots, but for the most part I wasn't particularly thrilled with the stuff I took today. However, near the end of my walk today, we passed by the building which houses "The Ann Arbor News".

The building was designed by Albert Kahn and it has some great Art Deco touches. The newspaper is ceasing publication in July, after a 174 year run. I don't know what will happen to the building after they close. It is such a classic building and I would love to get a nice shot of the whole building, but with traffic lights and such, it's hard to get something nice, without doing a lot of cloning work.

One of the things I've always liked about the News was the typography used in their masthead. As I walked by the building today I noticed how the hard light was creating some interesting shadows under the lettering. I walked across the street and with my long telephoto, I took a three shot pano of the lettering. After some stitching in Photoshop and cropping, I ended up with this image.

Amtrak by jhoweaa

Amtrak

I was taking some pictures of our new office when i heard the train whistle for the Saturday morning Amtrak train to Chicago. I didn't have the right lens on the camera, but I decided to take some shots as the train came around the curve. I was using an ultra-wide lens when i would have preferred something a little more normal to telephoto.

This particular image was cropped out of a much wider shot. I debated about trying to get rid of the lens flare, but I liked the way the dots came down toward the lights of the train engine. I used a combination of the Topaz Adjust filter on 'psychedelic' combined with a Topaz Simplify on 'Buzz Sim' with reduced opacity to come up with the final image.

1930 Packard 740 Roadster Hood Ornament by jhoweaa

1930 Packard 740 Roadster Hood Ornament

On Father's day I attended the annual Eyes on Design car show held at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Mansion in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. The show had cars from almost every decade.

This shot shows the hood ornament of a 1930 Packard 740 Roadster. I was attracted to this one in particular because it was something other than chrome. I tried to frame the shot so I could get an interesting background. I liked the way the wheels of the car sort of echo the wheel held by the mascot.

Other comments welcome!

Schwinn by jhoweaa

Schwinn

One of the interesting things about the 'Motor Muster' held at Greenfield Village, is the fact that the displays aren't limited to cars. They also had a wonderful collection of old scooters and bicycles. This is a shot of an old Schwinn bike, probably from the 50's judging by the styling. Anyway, I thought it was cool and I loved the way the chrome reflected the surrounding grass.

Discarded #1 by jhoweaa

Discarded #1

One of the things I like about going to the Motor Muster car show at Greenfield Village is visiting the village itself. The village is part of the Henry Ford Museum complex and as such has some great historical treasures. One area of the village has an old mill shop. Out in front is a collection of turbines, boiler parts, coal and more. I love rusty old things, and I like high contrast images, so when i get a chance to combine the two I'm very happy.

This image has had some minor processing done to bring out the color and texture, but it is very much in keeping with what I had in mind when I took the shot.

Comments always welcome.
