In the 16th century, the Spanish in Mexico heard rumors of 7 cities of gold in the north, leading Coronado on his expedition of exploration. They didn't find the precious metal and missed something even more wondrous, the richness of Puebloan culture. It turns out that the adobe used to make the Pueblos contained Mica, a reflective mineral which, during the golden hour, would have made the Pueblos sparkle in gold, not unlike the golden appearance of this canyon wall.
