I shot this with a 10.5mm DX format Nikkor fisheye. It's a 30 second exposure at f/13 to get the rays from our yard light. We had about 4 inches of snow fall the night before, rare even in the mountains of north Georgia where I live, and was determined to capture the snow before it all melts. I set a manual white balance on the camera in Kelvin mode of 2550 to create the icy cold blue feeling. This was shot from the tripod, a Gitzo 1325 with a Really Right Stuff BH-55, to ensure a crisp clean image. Hope you like the shot.

You made a perfect choice on the white balance, the cool blue matches both the cold and the nighttime conditions. I wish we had got some of this! I'll be in Knoxville next week so I'll see some snow then and I hope to get some good shots.
Hmmm, I see footprints in the backyard.....somebody playin' in the snow?
Thanks for sharing this, great job on capturing exactly what you intended.

Thanks Thomas, getting this image was a lot of fun and some learning as well. I was thinking about adding some very low power fill flash (SB-800 at 1/128th power at rear curtain), but decided to go available light only. I like it better this way. The flash would have destroyed the blue from the white balance setting.

The mood is set very well here. At first I thought maybe a little more exposure in the deck area like you thought but that would have detracted form the mood too much.
I hope you had a snowball fight since this is so rare for you.

the blue is great; makes it look cold out there though I'm sure your temps would be a welcome pleasure for me :-)

Kirk - Thanks buddy, it was a tough call on whether to use fill or not.
Bonnie - Although it has gotten into the teens lately, I know you guys are so much colder up there in Canada. We're lucky down here, around Christmas it was in the 70s.

Nice use of the fisheye. It looks VERY cold from the blue light...

Only the larger size does this shot justice. I keep wanting to see a bright red can of coke on the table, kind of like there are ghosts siting on those chairs enjoying the scene. The best part of the shot, for me, is the snow on the chairs and table.
