I think originality is rewarded in the fine art world, but in the commercial world it is not (even though everyone wants to believe otherwise). I actually feel that my professors did me a disservice by emphasizing originality. I would have been spared thousands of hours of creative anxiety if they had just said "just find two designs related to your project and do a mashup."

You should have drawn "writer" on part of the Art Director brain. Because every Art Director I've ever met thought they were a writer, and a photographer.
