Traffic on the road between Afgoye and Mogadishu, in Somalia. Thousands of AMISOM troops from Uganda and Burundi launched an offensive alongside Somali forces on May 22 to retake Afgoye, which links Mogadishu to the port town of Kismayo to Baidoa. Col Frederick Ndayisaba, the Burundian ground commander in Elasha Biyaha, which used to mark the frontline, said his troops took the town without any serious resistance, and have only faced harrassing fire from remnants of Al Shabaab.

Somalia's transitional government has pledged to elect a Constituent Assembly and to agree on a new constitution by August. The parliament building in Mogadishu (above) was destroyed during decades of civil war but is currently being rebuilt.
