Heidelberg Project, Detroit - April 2009

Heidelberg Project, Detroit - April 2009

What's the best way to handle abandoned debris in downtown Detroit? Internationally-acclaimed Detroit artist Tyree Guyton knows the answer - turn it into art and invite the masses. Despite silly controversies over the years (and two politically motivated demolitions, ahem - in my opinion), Detroit's Heidelberg Project is still drawing visitors and tourists to downtown Detroit. Guyton's work exemplifies the true meaning of community involvement. Visit www.heidelberg.org to find out more.

Heidelberg Project, Detroit, April 2009

When I was visiting the Heidelberg Project, in Detroit, with my family, we got a chance to chat with artist Tyree Guyton. I joked with him that my dad is a good handyman, and that he could help Tyree mount shopping carts on trees. Everyone laughed, but I was totally serious.

Tiger Stadium, Detroit - remaining wedge

Tiger Stadium, Detroit - remaining wedge

This is all that was left of Tiger Stadium in the Spring of 2009. Today, June 10, 2009, they are in the process of tearing her down. I'm glad I snapped this photo a month ago.

Tiger Stadium, Detroit, 2009, long after the lights went down

Tiger Stadium, Detroit, 2009, long after the lights went down

I remember attending my first double-header at the old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, when I was a young kid, in the 80's. It hasn't been a functioning stadium for a long time, and now (on June 10th, 2009) they are in the process of tearing down the last remaining wedge. How times flies. How time ages us all.
