Don't worry about the chives. They'll go nuts and stick around to double next year.

The cilantro...well...that stuff is so finicky I don't even bother with it which is a shame because I put it in everything and it's not cheap. Let me know how it does.

Mystery lettuce is fun!

I have a feeling my plants are too close together. But hell, it's NYC. Everyone is too close together. I hope they'll learn to deal with touching.

And shade. They'll only get 2 hours of direct sun a day. Lots of non-direct brightness the rest of the day — but not that direct sun.

So grow anyway damn it!!

And oh yeah, I also hope there's not a lot of lead in the soil. Right as I started to plant (and after I spent all the $$ on supplies), my neighbor tells me over the fence that they tested the soil years ago, and the results weren't good. Crap. I'll be testing the soil before eating anything. I hope I don't end up with a garden full of food too dangerous to eat.

Do all gardeners worry this much?

I haven't even told you about the squirrel problem.

I have a bad habit of planting too close together (24-36 inches? Oh, I'll try 18.) and still, stuff grows.

looks amazing!
i think the plants are spaced out just fine, they have plenty of room.
it's all just an experiment over here too.
my tomatoes are currently in transplant shock, as they just came out of their seed trays into the ground. hopefully they'll bounce back.
one can only hope!

p.s. according to the john jevons 'grow biointensive' method, most greens get planted like 6-8 inches apart. tomatoes and corn are like 15-24 because they get big. other than that i just keep my lettuce and kale stuffs about 6-8 and they form a little canopy to keep the soil moist.
