Wiedewelts artefact

Wiedewelts artefact

Jægerspris Palace is cited in 1318 as a royal residence. At that time it was called Abrahamstrup; and not until 1677 was it known as Jægerspris. In 1773, the palace was given to Crown Prince Frederik, who took an interest in history. He ordered the excavation of a number of prehistoric barrows, and in 1778-82 established a memorial park of 54 monuments to notable Danes, created by Johannes Wiedewelt. Frederik VII was also enchanted by the palace and purchased it for his consort, the Countess Danner. On her death in 1874, the palace passed to the foundation for "Destitute and Abandoned Girls, especially of the Peasantry". Today, the palace contains memorial chambers for Frederik VII and Countess Danner, a children's home and a museum. The nearby forest boasts three ancient oak trees. "
