new orleans |
photos from my global outreach project, march 2008. a lot of these photos are of the lighter aspects of the trip, but the images portraying destruction and injustice are the images that make up the majority of new orleans right now. three years after the storm, only a very small amount of progress has been made. what looks like a "field" to people who are unfamiliar with the situation is actually the lower ninth ward--the area of the city that was hit the hardest, where 1600+ died. i have a few photos taken off of the roof of a house--imagine sitting on that roof, stranded and "starving, hysterical, naked" (literally). i have a few shots of the public housing that is currently being demolished in NOLA. why? who knows. it scares me that so many people have no idea what's going on down there right now. it scares me that an area of the "most powerful country in the world" looks like a third world country. it scares me that so much of the country's money is being wasted away while so many americans suffer. i hope these photos can inspire some people to lend a helping hand, they give a pretty clear idea of what being a volunteer down there is like--please let me know if you have any questions about that.
